A Tetra Pak etching is a drypoint etching that is etched into a form of composite packaging instead of a metal plate. This printing process creates a very distinctive print image: the contours are soft and a little blurred, which creates a particular atmosphere in the image. These characteristics lend themselves very well to depicting the people of Laos as I experienced them: their peaceful slowness, their serene joie de vivre, their laconic calm.
The series "On the Mekong" shows scenes along the banks of the Mekong River as they passed me by while I was traveling on a slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang. During the two days of contemplative silence and sweet idleness, I was able to observe and experience everyday life. I experienced the unique rhythme of people's lives in a concentrated form.
The "Nong Sepon" series was created based on photos I took during a visit to two very remote villages in the districts of Nong and Sepon. The villages are located in the south of Laos, in Savannakhet province, and most of the villagers belong to the minority of the Brue. The people live in the humblest, destitute conditions. As they rarely get to see Europeans, they were quite reserved towards me. It was all the nicer, therefore, that they were happy to be photographed and slowly opened up along the way.
